Story of a solution · Laboratories and healthcare

Cold chain for biologicals, with no blind spots.

How we went from watching a single ultra-low freezer to building our own wireless network, which today protects irreplaceable material in clinical laboratories across Santander and Norte de Santander — and never loses a reading, not even when the internet goes down.

How it started

A clinical laboratory brought us the fear the whole sector shares: an ultra-low freezer at −80 °C holds years of work and material that cannot be replaced, and its only protection was a min-max thermometer with a paper log. That protects nobody at 2 a.m. on a Saturday — and audits kept asking for more: continuous, traceable, exportable records.

Then came a second challenge, from a biotechnology laboratory: critical equipment in places where WiFi does not reach, and where running sensor cable through the building was not an option. That is where the usual solution falls short — and where we decided to build our own infrastructure.

How we solved it

From the sensor inside the equipment to the alarm on the responsible person's phone, every link is ours.

01

Long-range radio, not WiFi

We chose LoRaWAN technology: sensors with years of battery life and a range that goes through the building. They install in hours, with no conduit or cabling, and do not depend on the laboratory's network. For the −80 °C units, special external probes that go inside the equipment.

02

Our own network, our own data

We set up the gateway on site and run our own LoRaWAN network server. The laboratory's data does not pass through the sensor manufacturer's cloud or any third-party platform: it travels straight to ours.

03

The gap problem — solved at the root

In operation we found the silent enemy: internet outages that left gaps in the history. The answer was twofold: every sensor keeps an internal log, and our system detects each gap and automatically recovers the missing readings from the sensor's memory once the connection returns. No site visits and no gaps in the audit trail — integrity verification runs at 100% today.

04

Calibration and serious alarms

Every sensor is adjusted with a calibration offset against a reference. Alarms cover temperature outside the range the laboratory defines, sensor down and low battery — to the phone and inbox of the responsible person, within minutes.

What it does today

Protects 24/7

A failure at dawn is reported at dawn — not discovered on Monday with the material already lost.

Feeds the audits

Continuous history with exact timestamps, exportable. No more transcribing paper logs.

More than 20 units monitored

Clinical laboratories in Santander and Norte de Santander trust their cold chain to this network.

And it scales

Adding a new unit means placing a sensor and registering it — the network is already there.
